Abstract

This paper describes the dynamics and development of Pran-Soeh: the local Javanese mysticism with followers of approximately 700 people in Yogyakarta and Central Java. It concludes that the emergence of Pran-Soeh is motivated by its followers’ move to acommodate the mainstream religius belief with the local Javanese mysticism at the backdrop of mounting pressures from the spread of other formal religious belief in the country. As a minority religious group, Pran-Soeh’s historical development has been very much influenced by its dialectical interaction with other formal religion in Indonesia. The article also highlights that the hegemony of the government-endorsed religiosity has obstructed the development of Pran-Soeh.

Abstract

This article explores the religious life of Indonesian migrants in Malaysia. The study was conducted in a village in Selangor State. On the basis of informants’ request, the real name of informants and places are not exposed. This study used ethnography, survey, and in-depth interview as techniques for data collection. The author lived with the migrants for about four years (2006-2010). The majority of migrants in the area are from East Java, especially from Lumajang, Jember and Madura, areas which are highly influenced by religious culture of Nahdatul Ulama. After immersing into their religious life, this study reveals three important topics of interest: religious ritual activities, piety, and relations between migrants and religious figures from their homeland. Although kyai and religious leaders are not physically present with the migrants, the migrants developed their own religious life. They create new religious figures or invite kyai, lora and habib who come to Malaysia for commercial or travel purposes to guide them. To a certain degree, the migrants are trying to defend their santri tradition amid the local government’s pressures on their status as illegal migrants.

Abstract

The article offers a fresh perspective to analyze the conflict through observation of media coverage, proposing that through this close observation, the form, factors and motives of conflict can be easily identified. Through its observation, this paper records that the clash between Ahmadiyyah and other religious groups has predominated social conflict in Indonesia since 2005 until 2011. It argues that the conflict persistence is due to a weak law enforcement. The state is deemed to be failed to protect the minority group against the violent acts of other religious groups and it is this failure that this artcile associates with the escalation and development of the conflict.

Abstract

This paper throws light on the historical development of Tionghoa Muslim in Yogyakarta. Using histrorical analysis, it found that the origins of Tionghoa Muslim can be traced back to the early 18th century of Javanese kingdom when, for instance, Sultan Hamengku Buwono III appointed a Muslim of Tionghoa origin to be his regent. In the new order era, Tionghoa Muslim in Yogyakarta kept their low profile against the backdrop of New Order regime’s policy of assimilation. However, after the gate of democratisation was opened in the late 1990’s, Tionghoa Muslims in this area have enjoyed a freedom to express their identity by, among others, celebrating Chinese New Year’s festival in the public. The articel then concludes that the construction of Tionghoa Muslim’s identity in Yogyakarta is very much affected by the government policy (politics).

Abstract

This paper proposes the legal argumentation about legal basis of a father’s shares in the family inheritence (waris) as ratified in the Indonesia’s Compilation of Islamic Law. Using Islamic Law theoretical framework, it challenges the popular misconception that is expressed in the compilation that a mother and children have one-third shares after father’s shares was given. Under this mode of thought, it is assumed that father’s and male family member’s shares are bigger that that of mother’s and female family member’s. In fact, it argues that the shares for all members of the family are the same: one-third.
